Purcell’s celebrated entertainment, The Fairy-Queen, (incidental music to a version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), remains one of his most opulent and colourful works.

Artists: Rufty-Tufty, Quatuor Franz-Joseph, Michel Landry (dance master) and various artists from the Festival.

Recreation of a country dance at a manor house in 17th century England featuring Henry Purcell’s music for the dances as well as chatting, flirting, relaxing in the parlour with a string quartet … and, of course, fine chocolate!

The World Premiere of Charles Daniels’ completed version of Purcell’s unfinished anthem “Arise My Muse”, written for Queen Mary in 1690 as well as the moving “Ode to Henry Purcell” by John Blow and Matthias Maute’s “Concerto on the Death of Henry Purcell ».

ATMA’s series of Bach cantata concerts and recordings continues with the 5th volume: cantatas for Pentecost, including BWV 68, 173, 174 and 184.

For the Grand Finale: gripping tragedy! Purcell`s only opera in the Italian style was written for the modest means of a girl’s college. Dido’s moving lament will end the opera and close the 2009 Festival!

Artists: Consort of the Voix humaines

The complete Purcell fantasias with Les Voix Humaines Consort on a unique collection of period viols from Hart House, University of Toronto, recently restored to playing condition. They will be heard together for the first time in Canada in decades, in this unique performance!

Concert given in memory of Shirley Cahn.

GELATO AU CHOCOLAT: Quartetski does Purcell!
Artists: Ensemble Quartetski

After their project on the music of Prokofiev and Satie, Quartetski now takes on Purcell! Formed in 2007 with the goal of rethinking and reinterpreting works by great composers within an improvised context. While staying true to the spirit of those composers, Quartetski uses their compositions as vehicles to discover new musical horizons, creating in the process a mosaic that is equal parts homage and exploration.
