In 2007, we went knocking at the gates to the Underworld ... Remembering the 5th edition: From Heaven to Hell
The Darling Foundry, a perfectly dismal place with its old furnaces was the obvious place to paint a portrait of hell, according to Susie Napper. The first festival to use this extraordinary place meant that it was standing room only for Orfeo! Anecdote from the 5th edition: the spectators were surprised to discover that the beggar, to whom they had thrown some spare change at the entrance, was in fact part of the show and was none other than the soprano Monika Mauch who had agreed to play this little joke on the audience.
